SPECIAL SEMINAR FOR GALWAY CARERS

The Western Region drugs task force is providing a special seminar on the 5th March for all ‘Kinship carers’.  This will provide support for carers such as grandparents or other family members, who take on the parenting role.

An EU report last year highlighted the fact that across Europe there are thousands of children and young people who are being cared for by family members. This may be due to a variety of reasons in family circumstances including ill health, bereavement or drug and alcohol issues. Sometimes these relationships are sanctioned by the courts or supported by social services, but often grandparents, uncles, aunts and siblings take on these roles on an informal basis. It is recognised that support for these ‘kinship carers’ can be limited.

The Seminar will be led by Megan O’Leary of the National Family Support Network who will talk about the challenges of kinship caring and focus on issues of rights for carers including guardianship.

The seminar will then provide a number of workshops looking at range of issues:

These will include sex, cyber bullying, bereavement and mental health. Workshops will be led by professionals from AIDS West, the JIGSAW Project and CONSOLE amongst others.

The seminar is aimed at both those who wish to better support kinship carers in the course of their work and kinship carers themselves. Attendees will be able to explore a range of issues, presented in a stimulating and engaging way.

The seminar will be held at the Clayton Hotel, Galway on Tuesday 5th March from 10am to 2pm.  The event is FREE and light refreshments will be provided.  If you are interested in attending please contact neil@aidswest.ie or telephone 091-566266.
