SEXUAL HEALTH PROMOTION

Specialist Certificate in Health Promotion (Sexual Health)

This is a Third Level Certificate accredited by NUI Galway in Sexual Health Promotion run every second year by AIDS West. The course aims to give people working or who are interested in the area of sexual health the necessary skills to deal with any issue that arises in the area of sexual health.

We hope to offer this course again in late 2012

This training will enable participants to:

Understand the concept of health, health education and health promotion;
Have a knowledge of the historical context and background to health promotion;
Develop the skills and knowledge to plan, implement and evaluate a range of sexual health promotion initiatives within their own work settings;
Develop group work and facilitation skills;
Understand the concept of sex, sexuality and relationships;
Have a knowledge of sexual arousal, sexual orientation, sexual dysfunction and abnormal sexual behaviour;
Be able to understand the affects self esteem, self efficacy, media, fashion, culture and religion have on sex and sexuality;
Develop an in-depth knowledge of the human reproduction system, pregnancy, contraception, HIV and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs);
Understand the concept of sexual health promotion and relate it to everyday life.

Assessment

Assessment is by means of completion of two academic essays.
A written account and presentation of a practical workshop.
The project will require a written account of the design and implementation of a Sexual Health Promotion Campaign.

Students will have access to University Library facilities in the Nurses Library in Galway Business Park, Dangan, Galway
