What is the Certificate in Understanding

HIV & AIDS?

This is a qualification offered by Terrence Higgins Trust/ City and Guilds through AIDS West, Galway. The qualification is at level 2 of the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) from City and Guilds (equivalent to FETAC Level 4).

The certificate is relevant to those who work in areas such as social services, health services, prison services, working with homeless organisations, drug support services and residential units or anybody that has an interest in understanding more about HIV and AIDS. There are no specific educational requirements for those undertaking this qualification.

This is a distance learning course spread over three months and including attendance at a training centre for two days.

The aim of this qualification is to increase the knowledge for those with a professional or personal interest in HIV.

Objectives:

• To provide people with a qualification in HIV and AIDS.
• To provide a forum for discussion on stigma and discrimination around HIV.
• To support participants in increasing awareness of HIV/AIDS.

Course Units / Timetable

Two day induction workshop to be held on 11th/12th March which will cover the contents of course lectures and materials, followed by three units of Distance Learning Assignments.

Unit 1
Transmission and Prevention of HIV

Unit 2
Stigma and Discrimination in HIV/ AIDS

Unit 3
Management of HIV/ AIDS

Assessment

Assessment is by means of three written assignments. Participants must complete all three assignments to the required standard to successfully achieve the certificate.
